For a few years now I have worked, on and off, for the Canadian government. I have been hired as a casual employee with Citizenship and Immigration three times in the last three years. A casual employee is hired on a 90-day contract, usually to make up for understaffing or shitty productivity. These employees are a quick fix for government offices, offering disposable labor without having to pay benefits or pensions. The terms of the contract stipulate that they can only be employed for 90 days per year, so the office cannot permanently hire the people they have trained. Another is usually hired and trained when a contract expires.

My contract was terminated today from one of these posts (two weeks
from completion, yay!). It was terminated because I used the internet
excessively for “personal reasons” and Viceland is one of the sites I
attempted to access. In the 200-page record of my internet use for
January, which lists websites and why they are restricted, Viceland was
blocked and marked as “tasteless.” Though your website wasn’t the most
“inappropriate” site I tried to access, it was the only one on the list
of hundreds deemed “tasteless.” So there you have it: In the opinion of
the Canadian Government and its internet monitors, Vice is tasteless. Congratulations guys, you did it.
