Like bright ideas? Vice does. Just to try something completely out of character, the purveyors of Vice Canada completed a corporate relay of 42km in the Toronto Marathon on Sunday. With the help of our friends at Puma, we contributed $600 to find a cure for cancer, threw on our turquoise Trons (thanks Spy Optic) and went for a jog on a fine fall day. The fact that most of us are alcoholic, fastfood consuming smokers who at best spend 45 minutes a year at the gym was only the start of our problems. Organizing team pick-up and drop-offs at the eight relay transfer points proved to be a logistical nightmare for our hung-over drivers who consider anything north of Bloor “outside the city”.
Consequently the biggest bellyacher of the bunch, rookie Jon Schouten,
ran double his allotted distance in jeans tighter than a debutant when
teammate Nick Chen-Yin showed up late for the tag. And veteran staffer
Tim McCready, clad in a toasty warm Mexican poncho, had to double back
on his course in order to officially tag off with intern Nicolette Yeung. Theories abound as to the hidden motives behind this heroic
display of athleticism. In the end we were content with finishing in
the bottom 25th percentile (cheating only-so-slightly) and winning the
best pants ever award at the finish line for flaming AC/DC Zumbas.
Things ended, as they should, with us discarding our remnants of vodka
Gatorade in favor of beer, wings and a jukebox at the Duke of
Gloucester pub, and the entire team going happily to bed before 9pm.
