Each panel in a comic must be similar enough to create continuity, but change enough to move the action forward. Making GIFs by hand is a similar, and equally time-intensive, job. These days, artists from the former field have been crossing into the latter, sometimes even incorporating GIF frames into their webcomics themselves.
