Doing This Might Actually Make You Smarter

You’re scrolling through TikTok with the sound off. Waiting in line for a coffee. Watching a guy try to parallel park for the third time. Not really paying attention to anything with a real focus. And somehow, that might be when your brain starts learning the most.

Researchers at the Janelia Research Campus have discovered that the brain can pick up complex patterns without effort, rewards, or even awareness. In a study published in Nature, they found that mice exposed to visual patterns with no instructions or incentives developed the same kinds of neural changes as mice trained to recognize those patterns on purpose.

“Even when you don’t think you’re doing anything special or hard, your brain is probably still working hard to help you memorize where you are,” said lead scientist Marius Pachitariu.

The experiment placed mice in virtual reality corridors filled with textures like leaves and spirals. One group was trained with rewards. The other simply wandered through with no goal. Despite that, both showed similar neural plasticity, the brain’s method for rewiring itself through experience.

“I never expected that without training mice to do a task, you would find the same neuroplasticity,” said researcher Lin Zhong.

Does ‘Zoning Out’ Actually Make You Smarter?

Later, when asked to complete a new pattern-recognition task, the mice who had only passively looked at the textures learned faster. Their brains had already done the groundwork. Exposure alone was enough to sharpen them.

While the study focused on mice and visual input, the researchers believe the same principle likely applies to humans—how we pick up on rhythms, languages, social dynamics, or spatial cues without trying to. That background processing might be the reason you recognize a song after hearing it a few times, or find your way through a place you barely remember walking through.

The team also found that different parts of the brain kick in depending on whether learning happens through structured goals or through open-ended exploration. It’s not all happening in one place, and it doesn’t always need to be directed.

“It’s entirely possible that a lot of the plasticity happens just with the animal’s own exploration,” Pachitariu added.
