Everything about Donovans is so damn French, right down to the flamboyantly popped collar. Hell, this tune, “Just4U,” the second off his new two-track EP, is more French than a mime eating a baguette along the Champs-Élysées. Practically bursting at the seams with glistening nu-disco grooves, the track also snips some heartful vocals from the cheesy ’90s R&B group Blackstreet, layering them over the shimmering synths you’d usually hear sliding out of a gilded Parisian nightclub. (Sidenote: I once went a Parisian nightclub underneath a bridge and made out with a guy who turned out to be really awkward and only wanted to Skype chat. Not all French dudes are sexy Serge Gainsbourgs… although I would probably be down to French kiss Donovans.)
Previously, Donovans has released his tunes on a whole gamut of big time labels like Fool’s Gold and Southern Fried Records. But “Just4U” is the first on 11Heads–the Frenchman’s own imprint.
