Delightful Doodles Capture NYC Characters | Monday Insta Illustrator

If you live in New York, you know the best people-watching takes place on the subway. You have time to sit and study another person, and in the case of Jennifer Hershy, draw them. A rotund gentleman reading a newspaper, a young girl clutching a toy, and a sour-faced woman doing her nails are just a few of the incredibly expressive characters Hershy captures on her Instagram account.

Hershy’s profile picture reveals a smiling older woman with hair somewhere between light brown and grey. The self-proclaimed “amateur doodler’s” Instagram bio reads, “Never too late to start to draw,” with the stated goal of “Observing people, capturing their essence.” A few months ago her feed transformed from bike selfies and nature landscapes to these New Yorker-style snapshots seemingly overnight. Since then, her skill, technique, and ability to pick out special moments have noticeably improved as she’s captured moments from her own life and photographs she admires. It’s a pleasure to see the world through her sharp eyes, not to mention inspirational: your excuse for not picking up a pen and starting that art project you’ve been thinking about just flew out the J train window.
