French artist Thomas Mailaender’s latest project, 100 Tiles, features a collection of customized ceramic tiles adorned with images from his infamous “Fun Archive,” an online image bank of amateur photos sent from friends over the years. Ranging from evil clowns riding in cars to artful bird-poop formations, the “Fun Archive” is something Mailaender’s been building and referencing within many of his other projects since 2000. He places the often absurd snapshots in varying physical contexts, forcing the reader to apply different meanings and also recognize what happens when the internet digests—and upchucks—photography. 100 Tiles will appear at PS1’s New York Art Book Fair from September 18 to 20.
