It isn’t easy to stand out at the catwalks, exhibitions, parties, afterparties, and after-afterparties of New York Fashion Week, but motion designer John McLaughlin knows the right way to work the crowd. “Hi I’m John, can I take a GIF portrait of you?” He asks subjects who range from Girls actress Zosia Mamet to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to pose with an animated 3D companion named Fuzzy Dude. Then, with a little compositing magic, McLaughlin inserts the cute virtual creature into his footage of models, designers, and journalists, and ends up with adorable, reality-bending GIFs.

“The Fuzzy Dude started one day while I was experimenting with the dynamic hair texture in Cinema 4D,” McLaughlin tells The Creators Project. “I applied it to a shape and put eyes on it and there it was.” Strange as the little fuzzballs may seem, imagining the sight of well-know fashionistas waving and waggling their arms for no apparent reason must be a thing to behold. But for NYFW 2015, the spectacle isn’t just to be at the cutting edge of fashion photography, it’s for a good cause: McLaughlin is using his social media-friendly creatures to broadcast a positive message for Champions Against Bullying. Get your fashion snapshots and your daily feel-goods in the fuzzy GIFs below.
