Insult to Injury: Week Ending 4/11

Welcome to Insult to Injury, the place where the Noisey editors gather on Fridays to empty the tank of their… thinky… writing brains… to… write… stuff. Usually it’s about like, music they’re listening to or… whatever. Stuff. Listen, our brains are fried. Here’s what we’ve all been listening to this week. Except for Kim who is at Coachella. Shirtless bros, get at her! You’re just her type.

Godflesh – “Like Rats”
This is definitely Kim. Since Dan did such a great job handling my entry last week while I was in Colombia, I’m letting Fred take care of mine this week while I’m at Coachella. He’s quite possibly the most intelligent, warm, and drool-worthy person that I, The KTB, have ever met, and he knows everything about everything. Seriously, the guy is like a bank of supercomputer servers of awesome with tons of failover so you never have a downtime from awesome. Anyway, I, definitely Kim, told him I wanted something with “balls.” I can’t believe he chose one of my favorite bands in the world, Godflesh! I love drum-machine-driven, pseudo-industrial metal from arguably Earache’s most important era, and with ex-members of Napalm Death too! It’s like he can read my mind!

Chance the Rapper – “The Writer”
About a year ago, Chance the Rapper dropped his mixtape Acid Rap, a collection of songs that went on to define the next three months of my life. Every moment I could, I spent listening to Acid Rap. And every moment I couldn’t, I spent wishing I was listening to Acid Rap. It ended up being one of my favorites of the year and, still, to this day, any moment I hear this dude’s squeaky flow, I think of those first moments of the year when it’s socially acceptable to wear shorts. So maybe it’s a coincidence—or maybe God just likes me more than you—because this Chance song surfaced earlier this week and, right now, it’s 75 degrees outside and the first thing I’m doing when I get off work is putting on a pair of motherfucking shorts. Summer 2014 is going to be incredible. Turn up.

Future ft. Pusha T, Pharrell, Casino – Move That Dope
I’ve bleached my beard blonde. People keep asking me why, and I don’t really have a good answer, except to say that now I work at Vice and this means that there are only, like, two things I could do with my body that would make it unacceptable for me to come into the office. Maybe not even, since I’m struggling to come up with something that our fantasy HR department would frown upon. Something involving a corpse, maybe? Anyway, even though I don’t have a method to my madness, I certainly have a model: Future’s hair in the “Move That Dope” video. Give me a few months for the roots to grow in and the bleach scabs to flake off, and I’ll be ready to find my own personal Ciara (ideally one with out such defined arms, since I hate feeling inadequate).

UGK – “Pinky Ring”

Yeah, I know I just published a thing about how people should pay attention to all the Texas rap that’s happened since UGK, but I also spent a bunch of time listening to Ridin’ Dirty this week for unrelated reasons, and there’s really nothing better. This shit is so smooth! It is so funky! Pimp C is like the most brilliant dude of all time! I could listen to him say the phrase “a 20 ounce steak and a fried side of shrimp” over and over forever. I should make it my ringtone. I should make a restaurant with an interactive menu that plays that snippet when you order that. Anyway, everything every rapper ever did UGK already thought of on Ridin’ Dirty.
