Every now and then, The Creators Project comes across an artwork that surprises and delights us every bit as much as it confuses us and otherwise has us begging for answers. This is art that defies conventions, challenges sensibilities, and breaks down barriers between comprehension and critique. You might like it—you might not “get it.” But we do. Turn on, take a deep breath, and just remember: It’s art!
While it might look like something a custodian at the Armory Show left behind, it’s actually American Bag, a 2015 sculpture by Gavin Turk. Turk, considered to be member of the Young British Artists, whose ranks include Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, and Michael Craig-Martin, crafted the lifesize piece out of bronze and painted it black, resulting in a work that a number of art fair attendees have mistaken for rubbish. Should anyone try to carry it off, however, it wouldn’t be that easy: American Bag weighs approximately 330lbs and is being sold for $140,000.
