Permadeath is a video series from Waypoint in which we attempt to beat a game with a limited number of lives, even in games that don’t traditionally have “lives.”
In our first Permadeath game, I’m trying to get as far as I can into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before I die three times. And every episode that I survive, I have to face a new difficult modifier.

Last time, I somehow managed to complete the Divine Beat Vah Ruta, gaining access to the super important Mipha’s Grace champion ability, which gives me a little extra wiggle room. (Here’s hoping you don’t vote to take it away from me this week.) If you missed that stream, watch it right here:
Before you vote, let’s recap the current difficulty modifiers:
- Remove my ability to fast-travel away to save my life from danger.
- Prevent me from accessing the weapon menu until the current weapon breaks or is thrown away.
- Forbid me from using both the main map and the mini-map, except for when fast-traveling.
- Can only fast travel to shrines located at Towns or Stables.
- Require that monster I fight be in the compendium before I kill them.
- Prevented me from using spears and javelins as melee weapons.
- Answer Waypoint Radio Question Bucket Questions
The punishment for breaking any of these is suggested by the community and decided by my judge, Waypoint’s Managing Editor Danielle Riendeau.
So, with one life left and one champion behind us, it’s time to vote for this week’s difficulty modifier. Find the poll below or visit this link to vote, and make sure to suggest some additional challenges for next time… If there is a next time.
(Note: I left these suggestions written exactly as they came in.)
