Taking paintings and giving them a digital spin is something we see quite a lot of in contemporary tech-art, from van Gogh’s Starry Night becoming an animation, to the classic still life fruit bowl getting a digital makeover, to Quayola’s digital refractions of classical paintings. Falling into this tradition of updating traditional artworks with a virtual aesthetic is Nandan Ghiya and his portrait series called deFacebook.

In the series he contorts old portrait pictures—photographs and paintings of men and women from India’s past—with blocky digital glitches. He even adapts the frames they’re in so they respond to the distortions, jutting out at insane angles and disturbing the portraits—the result is jarring images disfigured by pixels and the digital aesthetic.
