Fast Romantics are a five-piece pop collective that was formed after a whisky-soaked night in Calgary. Their latest video for “Afterlife Blues” has the band performing for a captive audience while singing about death. It takes a cold heart to stand around a hospital while solemnly playing the tambourine, but Fast Romantics manage to keep the video from being too dark in spite of the subject matter. The band had this to say when asked about making pop music that speaks to death:
“Death can be a dirty word when you’re making pop music, but that’s kind of funny because death is one of the most universally pop concepts out there, seeing as how it happens to everyone. “Afterlife Blues” is a make-believe imagining of what happens when you die. Whether you’re celebrating a life well-lived, or you’re all full of lamentation and regrets… one thing’s for sure: death is gonna be weird.”
