Not to be a downer, but the whole Black Friday spectacle gets a little more depressing every year, amirite? People were killed for god’s sake. Died discount shopping. And now it’s not even Black Friday anymore; for many retailers the madness begins on Thursday, on Thanksgiving, which is one of the few noncommercial, kind-spirited holidays left (overlooking the bit where the colonists swindled the Native Americans). What’s more, promotions for the day’s promotions start weeks in advance—including in cyberspace, and now also on the “front page of the internet.”

Reddit announced on its blog today that it will be embracing the consumerist chaos with an eight-hour livecast event streamed on its YouTube channel and featured on—naturally—its own online marketplace. The point, explains the company, is to let curious web denizens who are too afraid to leave the house on Friday experience some parallel version of the absurdity happening IRL.

“We decided to give people a way to experience the holiday chaos without having to venture outside,” a reddit spokesperson told the Hollywood Reporter when the idea was first floated last month. “We hope it will become an annual Thanksgiving tradition, like the Macy’s Parade and the Detroit Lions losing.” After all, nothing spells America like parades, sports, capitalism, and the internet.

The company’s snark is appreciated, as is the fact that it’s using the event—along with Stephen Colbert’s star appeal—to raise money for the education charity DonorsChoose.org. It’s also a major promotion for the products sold on the site’s own commercial operation, redditgifts. The shopping exchange spun off of a subreddit a few years ago; the company describes it as something of a massive redditor community “Secret Santa” whose mission is to spread happiness and cheer. Also gifts.

The event will include AMAs, videos of comedy segments, celebrity appearances, and musical acts. And this being the internet, reddit’ll feature deals from Bitcoin Black Friday, which of course is a thing this year. “It’s going to be part home-shopping-network, part old-school-holiday-variety-show, part fundraiser telethon, and part Muppets Take Manhattan,” reddit writes. I guess it’s one way to ride out a turkey hangover.
