Scandinavians aren’t known for handling their brutal winters well. A combination of short days, lack of sunlight, and general all around dour weather contribute to a higher-than-average suicide rate each season. In Nordic countries, Seasonal Affective Disorder Syndrome (or SADS) is just as common as the flu, causing residents to seek creative answers to replace lost melatonin. Recently Norwegian designers Lisa Pacini and Christine Istad have created a sort of portable sun, made out of LED lights, that stands 3 meters in diameter and shifts color to a wide range of mood-enhancing hues.

For almost a year the pair have traveled the back roads of Norway with their faux sun, using trucks and even boats to transport their good cheer around the country.

While the sun got to rest a few days here and there in public spaces across Norway, it found a semi-permanent home at the 100% Norway Festival in London which ended Sunday. In addition to the sun the exhibit also featured 10 other Scandinavian designers, most working with themes of light and nature.
