The Black Plague Comes to Madagascar

Tonight on City, we take a look at a disease most people think has been gone for hundreds of years: the black plague. Trigger warning for anyone scared of contracting easily cured diseases from mice and rats, but if you think you can handle it (or you want to terrify someone you love), check the show out tonight on City at midnight.

The black plague (or Yersinia pestis) has broken out in Madagascar. In late 2013, a deadly outbreak of the plague hit small villages around the country killing dozens of people. Rumoured to have taken root in overcrowded prisons, the disease has flourished amid Madagascar’s increasing poverty and poor waste management. Antibiotics to treat the disease have been developed and are available in most countries, but Madagascar’s rudimentary healthcare system has left many people stranded without care.
