Artist Martin Backes, creator of the pixel camouflage mask Pixelhead, has created a new machine that incessantly belts out greatest hits power ballads from one of the greatest decades in music: the incomparable, the transcendent, the superlative 90s. R Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly” and Whitney Houston’s, “I Will Always Love You” are just two songs in the machine’s arsenal.
The What do machines sing of? program attempts to “apply the appropriate human sentiments” during each performance of these emotionally charged pop songs. This is a behavior that Backes believes reflects “a desire, on the part of the machine, to become sophisticated enough to have its very own personality.”
